    coin collector s survival manual

For the reason that your teller might notice that the box is lighter and then notify a robber friend to mug you because your likely carrying something valueable. I can't listen to someone that paranoid seriously. He yacks about how 'your going to make so much money' and pays no respect to what makes coin collecting great - history, aesthetic, and community. Don't waste your time and read the introduction of the Red Book by Bowers. If you are anything short of an experienced dealer in coins and bullion you will learn something - or even a lot - from the book. It is current and the author discusses such issues as buying and selling coins on eBay and other auction sites on the web. There is also a lengthy discussion of coins shows.Everything from collecting, investing, to etiquette at coin shows. There is something in here for every collector. I personally like the addition of the precious metal value charts in the back of the book along with the fairly easy to understand equation provided in one of the chapters explaining (POM) Price Over Market. This comes in handy especially when purchasing gold for the bullion value. That and the book as a whole have truly helped me to become a better collector. Reading it for the second time now! This book definitely has the potential to be a great book on coin collecting and investing again; but, it is showing it's age and portions are becoming obsolete and irrelevant. I'm not saying this isn't a worthwhile book on coins; but, where was the editor. Page 296 also lists an completely out of date comparison of 1999 and 2004 modern coin values as coin values have been significantly affected by the recent rise in bullion prices in the last few years. There is a table in this book listing coins that are crack-out candidates in 2005. Those crack-out possibilities are probably long gone by now. The chapter about changing strategies for investing in makes reference to coins owned in 1989 and then compares them to 2005 prices.

GLF 5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't buy it to try to flip coins or to make money. I was interested in what I might do to improve my odds on when buying. I found the book listed a Numismatic Guild Literary award and invested. The Kindle sample convinced me to purchase. I was annoyed that the publisher set the price higher than the print version, but I, didn't really want to store the print version. It is my opinion that you will learn a lot from this book. I suppose there are those that have been collecting and trading for yraes and won't benefit, but it seems unlikely. The range of topics in this book and the wealth of information makes it a great choice. He comes across as overly concerned about money and very paranoid. For example he recommends that you put filler weight in your safety deposit box.

New readers of the seventh edition were probably not buying coins twenty years ago and this is 2011, not 2005. Stories of crooked dealers from the 1980's and the heavy references to crack-outs may be interesting from a historical perspective; but, are they really relevant when we have come to rely on certified grading over the last twenty years. The latest version of this book has a good discussion of the PCGS Plus grades. Since the grading service label inserts have evolved over the years, it would be helpful to see photos of the different insert labels and learn the dates they were in use. The book has worthwhile information for the person looking to sell their coins. Robert Gonzalez 5.0 out of 5 stars It includes everything from what kind of magnafying glass to buy, to buying rare gold and all things in between. It also explains how not to get ripped off at coin shows and by con-artist dealers. I would recommend this for beginners, as well as intermediate coin collectors. The information on the coin rip-off scemes including TV sales, modern coins promoted as 'rare', etc.The warnings about altered, over graded, ond over promoted coins can save an unsuspecting buyer a great percentage of their budget. The writing style is easy to follow and personal and never preachy. Do not invest serious money in a single coin until you read this book. This book covers a lot of ground, per the reviews below, much of it essential. The single most valuable section, to my mind, is the in-depth discussion of coin grades as used by the professionals, and a discussion of recent changes made in grading standards. Also helpful is the section discussing ways to spot coins that may not be as good as the 'look,' and why (toning, doctoring, cleaning, etc.). I definitely can recommend this book as a stand alone purchase but would steer the interested buyer to another of Mr. Travers' books titled 'How to make money in coins right now.' I say this only because each book covers a lot of the same ground but the other contains information crucial to the 'value' question that every coin collector has at the back of his mind. Either will do, however, I just don't recommend purchasing both: One or the other and spend the money you don't spend on a nice collectible coin.Sorry, we failed to record your vote.

Never buy from dealers period. Get your coins on Ebay from sellers with no negative feedback that offer return guarantee. Never pay book value for coins.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Plastic Binding: Plastic binding is a process where plastic material is used to hold the sheets of a document together. It is an inexpensive and durable method of binding. There are various types of plastic binders available on the market. Plastic comb binders bind documents quickly and economically, making the material lie flat without any bulges. Plastic comb binding makes use of binding supplies of diverse colors and sizes, and also allows you to alter the document at any time. Plastic coil binding machines employ a sturdy yet supple coil to bind the material together. The coil is quickly woven into the punches. The end result is a compact, secure document that looks presentable and professional. On opening, the pages will lie flat. Heavy-duty plastic binders are apt for large-scale binding requirements. They save the company both time and money. PLASTIC COMB BINDING Also know as ' GBC Binding ': An efficient, economical choice for reports, sales presentations, training manuals, cookbooks and more. Documents will lie flat and pages can fold back.

The binding process is simple: first punch the pages; then insert the comb into the machine and pull the handle to spread the comb open. Lay the punched pages into the comb and pull the handle to close the comb. Plastic Comb bound can be easily disassembled and reassembled without damage. Machines can be purchased as either a combination punch and comb-bind binding system; or as two separate machines: a punch and comb opener. The combination plastic binding system is for low to mid volume use in offices, print shops, schools, churches, etc. While the punch and comb opener as separate machines allows are recommended for greater punch capacity and increased production. Each plastic comb diameter binds a maximum number of pages and is purchased based on the size of the document to be bound. PLASTIC COIL BIND Flexible plastic spiral coil gives a new look to professional documents, proposals, reports, calendars and more. This method is not only great for documents that need to lie flat but also enables pages to fold back. Coil is spun onto document using either a roller: the punched edge and started coil are leaned against a spinning roller, or mandrel: punched pages lay flat, coil slides over mandrel, wheel spins coil onto document. Machines can be purchased as either a binding system that combinds a punch and coil inserter into one machine, or as two separate machines: a punch and coil inserter. The combination coil binding system is for low to mid volume use in offices, print shops, schools, churches, etc. The punch and coil inserter as separate machines allows for greater punch capacity per lift and increased production for larger jobs. Each plastic coil pitch and diameter binds a maximum number of sheets and is purchased based on the number of sheets in the document to be bound. But recently, designing an inter-valve transformer and doing all the background reading I could, I dug it out and came across what seems to be a basic error. See attached a couple of pages, dealing with the design of a choke (or transformer) carrying DC. The table shows a set of designs, for particular inductance and current rating, using a stated laminated core. The resulting DC resistance, voltage drop, and required number of turns are given. The necessary air gap is not given in the table, basically it's adjust-on-test. At the foot of the table are scaling factors, to enable other inductance or current requirements to be derived. But I don't understand the derivation of these and there seems to be a fundamental error. If the current rating is to be multiplied by 10, keeping the same inductance, the table says the turns have to be multiplied by 3.2 (square root of 10?). I reckon this should be x10, not x3.2. Here's why. Assume an original design is near optimal, ie the core is approaching saturation at the rated current (this means that the air gap is as small as possible, thus the number of turns is as low as possible to achieve required inductance, which allows the biggest wire gauge to fit the space, and so gives lowest DC resistance). Consider what happens if rated current is increased by x10, and turns by x3.2, while keeping inductance constant. Increasing turns by x3.2 will increase inductance by x3.2? ie x10. So to bring inductance back down to original value, the air gap must be increased so that the overall reluctance is 10x original value. Now, see the effect of increasing current by x10. This alone will increase flux by x10. And we have an increase in turns of x3.2, so the two together will give an increase of x32.

I'd be delighted to be proven wrong, and it seems relevant to this discussion. ChrisI'm aware of the principle that an air gap is good for increasing saturation current, but it also has a big effect on the inductance. Consider the core you have in your hand. Put some turns on it untilyou get the inductance you need. Now pass a smidgen of DC through it. That will create a small, steady level of flux in the core. Ideally though the inductance won't change. As you increase the current, however, the level of flux in the core will increase. Eventually, the core will saturate, and inductance will drop massively. Tough. Suppose the curent we want to pass through our inductor is right at that threshold point. We need a way of shifting the operating point away from saturation. We can add an air gap so that the flux in the core is halved (so we're only 50% towards saturation). Down side is that the inductance is also halved. BUT - and here's the clever bit - we can increase the turns by 1.41, which brings the flux in the core to 70% of saturation (flux is proportional to turns) yet the inductance will return to the original value (because inductance is proportional to turns?). So now we have our inductor, with a good margin from saturation, yet giving us the inductance we want. In principle, you can choose an air gap for any combination of current level and inductance requirement. In practice, there are other things to consider, such as temperature rise with lots of turns of the necessarily thinner wire to fit in the available space. But you'll get the idea. But inductance is proportional to turns squared because doubling the turns doubles the flux. And then, when the flux changes, there are twice as many turns, so the same flux change doubles the terminal voltage. Put the two together and you get four times the voltage for the same current change, hence four times the inductance.

But we had to increase the gap to change reluctance - throwing in the effect of this means we still end up with an increase in flux of x3.2. If you continue increasing current rating, you will end up with an arbitrarily high flux density in the core - which is simply untenable, as all materials will saturate at some point. (The text makes it clear that the design table ignores effects such as temperature rise, power dissipation, etc. If any of these are excessive, there are scaling factors to allow use of larger or smaller core sets). Conversely, increasing the gap a lot more, and increasing turns correspondingly, ending up with turns raised by x10 (rather than x3.2) ends up with a flux level equal to that as started, ie as high as possible without saturating the core. The problem I have, is that I would have thought this would have been corrected by the 8th printing of the book. It came to light because I was trying to see what flux density other people worked their cores at, and I came up with a different figure for each line in the table. The Use of AF transformers (Crowhurst, 1953, Norman Price habdbook 3) has more detail on the design, with nomograns etc, but omits the case of DC in the windings and the effects of an airgap. There were some good articles on this in Electronic Engineering in the early 40's and possibly WW at an earlier date. EdOn a related note, can anyone point me to a reference on how the inductance and saturation current of an inductor are affected by adding an air gap. I'm aware of the principle that an air gap is good for increasing saturation current, but it also has a big effect on the inductance. I did some experiments recently with the formulae in an Epcos ferrite core data sheet and it seemed to me that the overall energy storage possible in a gapped core was about the same as in a solid one - an air gap increase the saturation current but reduced the inductance so the effects pretty much cancelled out.

The goal of 'Whole Building' Design is to create a successful high-performance building by applying an integrated design and team approach to the project during the planning and programming phases. Disclaimer. I hope this guide will serve as a comprehensive step-by-step reference with easy to follow instructions. By following this guide you can build a Tesla coil capable of generating over 4' arcs of lightning. This section mostly contains tedious equations and formulas used in the design process. Fortunately the use of software programs, like the TeslaMap Tesla coil design program can quickly and easily perform all the necessary calculations for you. If you decide to use a program, you can skip the design section and use it as a reference. This section will likely make more sense after reading the Construction section, which describes the Tesla coil parts in greater detail. I'll show you all the required parts and offer advice to help you avoid mistakes. I'll offer some troubleshooting tips to help you solve those little issues that often come up.

It's helpful to have some hands-on experience with electronics, but it's not necessarily required. This guide only covers traditional Tesla coils, not solid-state Tesla coils or magnifying Tesla coils. However, all types of Tesla coils share many common parts and principles of operation so this guide may still be used as a reference for other types of Tesla coils. I try to assure that all the information in this guide is correct, but research is continually producing new techniques and old ideas are being improved or discarded. The TeslaMap program is the fastest and easiest way to design a Tesla coil. Several sample Tesla coil designs are included with the TeslaMap program. TeslaMap is ideal for quickly and easily generating a working Tesla coil design, however it is not a Tesla coil modeling program. A slightly more accurate program called JAVATC written by Bart Anderson can provide more detailed Tesla coil parameters, although it can be more difficult and time consuming to use. Note that this is a design manual and construction techniques are not included. Tesla coils using the designs in this handbook will work satisfactorily provided quality materials and good construction methods are used. Many articles have been written giving construction details for building Tesla coils and the reader is referred to these publications for this type of information. Tesla coils have the ability to generate intense electric fields that may be used to contain plasmas for fusion and nuclear research. For this reason, Tesla coils may play an important part in finding a new future energy source. It is the aim of this design manual to create interest in these devices with the possibility that Tesla coil builders may make important future discoveries in this technology. Electrical engineering handbooks state that the design of Tesla coils is empirical. This is typical of most practical engineering design work. When confronted with this type of situation engineers and scientists collect the necessary empirical data from systems that have been built and tested and the data is converted into equations and graphs that can be used to design and build new systems. This is the approach that has been taken for this manual. There are 26 graphs and 13 drawings which are based on data from actual coils that have been built and tested by the author and many other coil builders. The graphs cover all of the major Tesla coil parameters. The drawings include special homemade instruments and instructions for testing the coil parameters. The graphs and drawings are all new and have never been published before. Also included in this volume is a section on Tesla's extra coil. This design manual also includes the documentation for a new computer program that is available separately. Refer to the JHCTES program flyer for more information on the diskette. Continue reading. The signal strength from donor antenna directly af fects the indoor coverage of t he repeater. It is import ant to choose the location to install the donor antenna. 3. In order to avoid oscillation in repeater, we need an isolation which is the repeater gain plus 15dB. Use the outdoor signal, donor antenna gain, coaxial cable loss, service antenna gain and coverage area to decide the best gain that the repeater should be adjusted. Dial END z Check Donor Ant.No Service In used Ye s Good Ye s No Answer: The DL Red LED will be illuminated in a situation when the dist ance between the main TX unit and a donor antenna is not suffici ent. Coiler recommends that the dist ance between the two is no less than 5 meters. If the situation occurs, please increase the dist ance between the donor antenna and the main TX unit or reduce the DL gain by pushing the down button (please use a needle) of the DL gain until the LED stops bli nking. In a typical situation, DL alar m may only occur during the initial installation, but not during the regular use. In case that the isolation has not been increased for an exte nded period of time, the TX Repeater System will auto shut down. Q6. The UL red LED illuminated.

Answer: The UL Red LED will be illuminated in a situation when the dist ance between the main TX unit and a mob ile phone is not suf ficient. Coiler recommends that the dist ance between the two is no less than 1 meter. If the situation oc curs, please increase the distance between your mobile phone and the main TX unit or reduce the UL gain by pushing the down butto n (please use a needle) of the UL gain until the LED stops blinking. In a situation when UL isolation is not sufficient, the repeater will be functional; however the call quality may decrease. Auto Shut Down ASD and Auto T urn On A T O The TX Repeater System f eatures DL Auto Shut Down (ASD) function to protect This may happen if the signal from a n earby base station is too strong or if the operator has changed c onfiguration of the mobile network (e.g. by setting up a mobile base stat ion in a nearby area). The situation is usually tem porary. ASD will temporarily disable the amplifier and trigger the DL alarm LED. Auto T urn On function will automatically determ ine, every 15 seconds, if the signal level has dropped to the normal level and reactivate th e functions of the repeater. The A T O will repeat the process 3 times (after then it wi ll require manual restart). ASD may be also triggered if isolation between the donor antenna and the repeater unit has been insuf ficient for an extended period o f tim e (please see Automatic Isolation Detection above.) Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interferen ce, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that m ay cause undesired operation. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interf erence in a residentia l installation. The following criteria should be considered: At all times the largest sized gooseneck should be used to minimise fatigue damage to the tubing. The CT management system should provide details of the CT fatigue life, such as: Also a record of the X-ray and hardness test performed on the welded area, as well as the ball size pumped through the coiled tubing after the weld. This will assist with site make-up, act as a fishing guide and help to ensure that the dimensions of the BHA are compatible with the wellbore and height of the riser. However, it is extremely important, when planning any coiled tubing operation, that everyone concerned is aware of the basic safety standards, such as hazardous zones, fire precautions and emergency procedures. It should be noted that if the work program includes hydrocarbon production through the coiled tubing, the hazardous area drawing needs to be modified accordingly to include the coiled tubing reel and production equipment. Although the nitrogen tanks do not contain flammable gas or vapour, the hazards associated with pressurised gas should not be overlooked in the equipment layout for protection of personnel and nearby facilities. With particular reference to offshore locations, a detailed drawing showing dimensions of the well, riser, BOPs, crossovers, pup joints and injector head will ensure that the necessary height requirement is available. This will vary dependant on location but should include: A copy of the proposed coiled tubing programme should be available to all present. Certain constraints may be imposed, which need to be addressed at the planning stage. Permits should be applied for before equipment mobilisation. Concise and frequent communication between the phases from job objective setting to completion can avoid countless problems and unnecessary activity. A detailed procedure and well schematic should be prepared, reviewed and agreed by all parties well before the task to be performed.

This not only enables real-time evaluation but also treatment optimization, so the entire intervention can be conducted with one trip in the hole. Consequently, the well is more quickly returned to production, minimizing well downtime. Click below to get started. We need a little more information from you before we can grant you access. For many of the activities it is preferable to work within the well without having to resort to kill fluid. The application of kill fluid (or loss circulation fluid) to the reservoir can in many cases permanently damage the well productivity. Additionally the ability to operate safely without kill fluid saves considerable material (brine salts, etc.), pumping costs and possible workover fluid losses to the formation. There is no substitute for thorough planning. Most well intervention problems can be detected and avoided during the planning phase. All information should be considered, including mechanical, well, production, reservoir and associated historical well intervention data. Offset data can often be invaluable when evaluating the task. Utilising accepted fluid rheology models and proven correlations for two-phase flow, thermodynamic properties and friction gradients, accurate analysis of flow conditions can be achieved. The computer systems consider specific well geometry, contact friction and coiled tubing material strengths in the determination of the stress conditions and also take into account circulation effects. Fluid velocities and two-phase liquid slip effects change as the direction of gravity changes relative to the flow path. Force analysis has to incorporate additional effects such as contact friction and helical buckling. Specific items may include canal dredging and equipment (e.g. flowline) isolation and removal from the location.Weather forecasts should be reviewed for weather critical activities.

In principle before starting a job there should be a spare CT reel as back up, particularly relevant for a 'critical' job at a remote location. In implementing this policy Shell companies not only comply with the requirements of the relevant legislation but promote, in an appropriate manner, measures for the protection of health, safety and the environment for all who may be affected directly or indirectly by their activities. The technical information withinthis manual is intended to provide a basic understanding of the equipment, tools, processes and designrequirements associated with modern coiled tubing operations. Comprehensive and detailed information, suchas that required to safely and successfully complete the design and execution of coiled tubing operations, maynot be included. Consequently, it is recommended that the local Dowell representative be consulted during thefeasibility or design preparation phase of any coiled tubing operation. The major componentsof each item are identified and a short explanation of itsfunction given. A basic CT equipment package consists of the follow-ing items. Injector head Coiled tubing reel Power pack Control cabin Pressure control equipment 1.1 INJECTOR HEAD The tractive components of the injector head are gener-ally configured to drive two opposing, endless chains onwhich are mounted a series of short gripper blocks. Thegripper blocks are shaped to the size of the tubing beingused, and the chains are pressed together with thetubing held between. The total load of the CT in the wellis held by the friction of these blocks on the tubingsurface. Hydraulic motors drive the chains, therebyallowing the tubing to be run in or out of the wellbore. Three makes of injector head may be encountered inDowell CT operations: Hydra-Rig, Stewart andStevenson, and Uniflex (found on earlier CT units, nowsupported by Rebound Rig International). Hydraulic motors Drive chains Chain tensioners Gooseneck or guide-arch Weight indicator Figure 1.

By controlling thepressure and flow rate of the hydraulic fluid delivered tothe motors, the speed and, more importantly, potentialforce exerted by the injector head can be controlled. Two motors, generally synchronized through a gearbox, are used to drive the injector head. 50-in. radius gooseneck Injector drive motor Inside chain tensioner Weight indicator load cell Outside chain tensioner COILED TUBING CLIENT SCHOOLCOILED TUBING AND WELL CONTROL EQUIPMENT Page 3 Section 1Schlumberger Dowell 1.1.2 Drive Chains The chains consist of links, gripper blocks and rollerbearings (conventional chain). Thetensile load measured is a function of the weight of thetubing hanging in the well, and includes the effect of thewellhead pressure and buoyancy. The weight indicatorwill also let the operator see when the tubing tags orhangs up on an obstruction. Weight indicators mayoperate hydraulically, electronically or as a combinationof both. A recording device must always be incorporatedinto the weight indicator system COILED TUBING CLIENT SCHOOLCOILED TUBING AND WELL CONTROL EQUIPMENT Page 5 Section 1Schlumberger Dowell 1.2 COILED TUBING REEL The CT reel is used to store and transport the tubing. Allof the effort required to run, and retrieve the CT from thewell is provided by the injector head.

Should it become necessary to deviate from the approved procedure, adequate consideration should be given to the consequent implications and adequate time allowed for review and approval. Coiled tubing emergency procedures will form the basis of these contingency plans. Of particular importance are the aspects of Well Control Procedures, which are complicated by the large inventory of fluid contained within the reel of coiled tubing. This requires various actions dependent on the point of failure, specific fluid conditions, etc. This is especially important around the tubing reel. Coiled tubing units must be adequately anchored regardless of unit size or the operation being performed. Procedures should be observed, work permits strictly adhered to, and equipment operated within designed parameters. The coiled tubing reel should be blown dry with nitrogen prior to being despatched to the location. Each pressure test should be individually recorded on charts which are signed on satisfactory completion. In the absence of such a figure, 1.5 times the manufacturers maximum working pressure should be used. This should be a hydrostatic test to the maximum expected CITHP to verify pressure integrity every time the equipment is rigged up. This test must be maintained for a minimum period of 15 minutes after stabilisation. Testing should always be carried out hydraulically and not with gas. The most common problem is buckling when the tubing hits some object or catches on a change of borehole diameter. The potential for buckling is a function of the coiled tubing wall thickness, diameter, and the size of the tubing or casing that the coiled tubing is being run into. Wellhead valves may either be locked open or control transferred to a separate control skid. Sub surface safety valves may be removed and sleeved, sleeved only, or control transferred to a separate control skid.

They should not be held open by locking in hydraulic control pressure at the wellhead as pressure can bleed off over time and allow the valve to close. The size of the bottom hole assembly in relation to the completion diameter can have a significant effect on the running in and pulling out weight. In the case of large bottom hole assemblies in relatively small tubulars, the annular clearance can be such that significant pistoning effects can occur which resist the movement of the coiled tubing and can cause swabbing of the well. High viscosity fluids in the annulus can also cause this effect. This means that in high pressure wells the weight indicator will read negative until sufficient weight of coiled tubing is in the well to overcome the effect of pressure.Should buckling occur while running in hole the pipe will form a kink that will in effect prevent circulation. If pumping liquid, this will be noticed by a rapid increase in circulating pressure. In many instances of buckling, the tubing has been folded over repeatedly before the injector has been stopped, resulting in a difficult operation to retrieve the coiled tubing. This may be increased, for operations such as PLTs, if the hole section has been previously traversed to ensure that no restrictions are evident. This reduced running speed should be applied for 50 feet (15 m) before and 50 feet (15 m) after the position of the downhole obstruction to allow for any discrepancies in the depth readings. The same speed reductions as above should be applied when pulling through well conduit restrictions or in open hole.If a computer prediction is not available to the operator, the following limits are recommended: Operating procedures should address hot work requirement and need to be strictly adhered to. However, on site welding of coiled tubing is not recommended unless proper testing procedures can be adopted after the welding.

The tensionbetween the reel and injector is necessary to ensure thesmooth feeding of the injector and proper spooling ontothe tubing reel. The major components of the CT reelinclude the following. Reel drum Reel drive system Levelwind assembly Reel swivel and manifold 1.2.1 Reel Drum The capacity of any reel drum for a given size of tubingmay be calculated using the procedure and formulagiven below. The results are approximate, and theformula assumes ideal spooling of the tubing. The freeboard is the amount of clearance between theOD of the reel flanges and the OD of the wrapped tubingat maximum capacity (L). The minimum recommendedfreeboard varies with the tubing size. The manual includes optimum CT String specifications, stress limitations and safety factors, equipment requirements, elements of pre-job design and planning, and onsite operational guidelines The project was completed in December 2001. INTRODUCTION Objective of this Manual.3CTES, L.P..4 Copyright 2005, CTES, L.P. Introduction Objective of this Manual OBJECTIVE OF THIS MANUAL The objective of this manual is to prepare personnel for planning and executing CT workover, completion, and drilling operations in a safe and cost-effective manner. Pursuant to this objec-tive, the manual provides a detailed discussion of CT technology and its applications and pro-vides general guidelines for planning and executing CT operations. A significant portion of this manual is devoted to minimizing the risks of CT operations while maximizing their bene-fits. It has offices in Conroe, Texas, USA, Aberdeen, Scotland, and Calgary, Alberta. The CTES team combines the expertise and talents of experienced engi-neers, programmers and industry specialists to supply products and services that improve well interventions. These include well intervention software, engineering projects, consulting, training and operations support.

Well service or workover applica-tions still account for over three-quarters of CT work. However, the recent and more advanced use of CT technology for completion and drilling applications is rapidly gaining popularity. The major driving force behind the original use of CT was a desire to perform remedial work on a live well. To do this, three developments were required: A continuous conduit capable of being inserted into the wellbore (CT string). A means of running and retrieving the string into or out of the wellbore while under pres- sure (injector head). A device capable of providing a dynamic seal around the tubing string (stripper or packoff device). The project was named operation PLUTO, an acronym for Pipe Lines Under The Ocean, and involved the fabrication and laying of several pipelines across the English Channel. The successful fabrication and spooling of continuous flexible pipeline laid the foundation for further developments that eventually led to the tubing strings used in modern CT. Steps leading to the first CT unit included: In the late 1940s, several concepts relating to the injection of continuous tubing or cable into a live wellbore were patented.
