Other social phenomena, like the prevalence of two-income families, suggest that convenient services such as wash-and-fold will continue to grow in popularity as working parents have less time to attend to household chores like laundry. In other words, although the majority of laundromat customers are low- to middle-income renters, some laundries are tapping into higher-income markets by offering convenience: wash-and-fold service and large machines. In addition, office dress codes are growing increasingly less formal. And as more people wear casual clothing (which doesn't require dry cleaning) to work and leave the nicer duds for special occasions, you may find that consumers will be making more trips to the laundromat. The Bad News While the trends we've mentioned are favorable for entrepreneurs entering the laundry business, they don't suggest that business is booming. In some areas of the country, there are too many laundromats already. However, there is room for new laundry owners. Many get into the business by purchasing an existing laundry and renovating it. Some also find that they can build a new laundry in an area with competing laundries and thrive by offering a bigger store, more services and better customer relations. Another way to get into the business is to locate your store where there is the best potential need for a new laundry: in an area that's experiencing population growth. Don't buy a store just because it's for sale or build a store just because you have a great idea for a new gimmick. You'll need to be very careful to make sure there's enough of a customer base to make your business thrive. You may be able to draw a little extra business from people who like using your store better because of its cleanliness or from people who use your wash-and-fold service, but the core of your business will be people who just want to get their laundry done quickly and conveniently.

Starting a coin-operated laundry might be your ticket to entrepreneurial success. It was excerpted from our Coin-Operated Laundry start-up guide, available from Entrepreneur Bookstore. The coin-operated laundry industry has undergone a revolution. Some of them don't even use coins. Instead, customers use swipe cards that subtract the cost of the wash or dry, much like a phone card or debit card. Many laundry owners also employ attendants to keep an eye on the store and help customers use the equipment. Laundromat Renaissance The coin-operated laundry industry has changed in response to several trends. The first is that, for most of us, meeting the demands of work and our personal lives leads to a time crunch -- there just aren't enough hours in the day to accomplish everything we would like to. Laundry owners are capitalizing on this reality by offering their customers time-saving convenience in the form of wash-and-fold (drop-off service) and dry-cleaning service. Some are even picking up laundry from customers' homes and delivering it back to them clean and folded. In addition, owners have realized that they can maximize their profits by providing customers with access to multiple services. Since they're paying a set amount of rent on their commercial space, they might as well use that space to its fullest potential. Many owners around the country are serving food, renting mailboxes and offering free internet access. Because newer laundries are bigger than in the past -- often 3,000 or 4,000 square feet -- overhead is higher, and owners are looking for ways to cover the cost. These additional services demand little increase in overhead because the rent is already paid for. Customers benefit by being able to use several services all in one convenient location. Everybody wants to squeeze as much money as possible out of their space.

No Experience Necessary None of the entrepreneurs interviewed for the Coin-Operated Laundry start-up guide had experience in the laundry business when they first started out. One had a resume that included milking cows, another was a contractor, yet another ran a rental equipment business. Most just decided that starting a laundry was a good business opportunity. However, they all recommend that new entrepreneurs research the business by talking to laundry owners, joining associations and reading the trade literature. Collette Clarkson knew nothing about the business before she started a laundromat in Evans, Colorado, with Kim Clarkson, her business partner. They spoke to a number of laundry owners about the business and read as many issues of trade magazines as they could find. While no particular experience is necessary, a business background is always important. In addition, a background in machine repair or a knack for fixing machines helps. Owners who have experience with laundry equipment are able to cut down on the cost of repairs. But others have found that they can learn about the machines and make some repairs themselves, or hire a repairperson and avoid the headache altogether. The self-service laundry business is an open club. With enough enthusiasm, interest and business-savvy, you can join the club and succeed in the industry. The Laundromat Personality You may think that the laundry business is about clothes, but what it's really about is people. It's a service business, and like any service business, you need to treat your customers well if you want them to return to your store. If you're friendly, your customers will want to use your store. By taking the time to talk to them, you will also be able to learn about their laundry needs and their preferences for services. Ultimately, this kind of information will help you improve the quality of your business so that you can attract even more customers.

If there are already enough laundromats in the neighborhood to serve their needs, they're not as likely to patronize your store. Finally, you also need to consider that getting into the laundry business requires a large initial investment.Three-quarters of laundry owners own only one store, and very few have more than two. While there are no national laundry chains, a few local chains are starting to grow in various parts of the country. These chains are still quite localized, though, and only a few consist of more than a few dozen. For a little more than half of laundry owners, operating the store(s) is their full-time job. Others take the moonlighting approach-they manage other businesses or work a day job. But more laundry owners are starting to own larger stores and more than one store. These people are able to survive on the income larger stores or multiple stores generate. The expenses incurred while running a store range between 65 and 115 percent of the gross income. Wallace says these profit margins have less to do with the size of the store than with its owner. An owner who runs his or her store well-who keeps it clean, repairs its equipment quickly, uses energy-efficient systems and offers good customer service-will see profit margins of about 35 percent. The steady income that a laundry generates is a plus for many people. If you're looking for a business that will keep the cash flowing no matter what the rest of the economy is doing, you've found it in laundries. Clean clothes are a necessity, not a luxury, so people are going to use laundromats no matter how the stock market is performing. The business is also fairly steady month in, month out. So unless you draw on vacationers' dollars in a place with seasonal tourism, you'll find that you can count on a fairly steady income throughout the year.

, leaving enough time for the last loads of laundry to be finished. You can either let customers out yourself or install a lock system that allows them to leave but prevents others from coming inside. Scrub-a-Dub-Dub The first order of business for you or an employee you hire is to clean your store thoroughly, at least once a day. This will take about two to three hours. You or your employee will need to do the following: Mop the floors Wipe down the machines Clean the soap dispensers in your front-load washers Wash off the folding tables Clean the bathroom Empty the trash Wash the windows Clean the vending machines, change machines and video game screens The best time to clean is after customers have gone-that way you or your employees can clean more efficiently. You'll also avoid the risk of customers slipping on wet floors or tripping over cleaning equipment. If you have a large or busy store, however, you may find that it requires cleaning twice a day. You can wipe down the machines and folding tables easily while customers are in the store, but save the floor for after they've left or for a slow period of the day. Collecting Coins One chore you're not likely to delegate to an employee is collecting money from the machines. If you have a card system, your job is much easier. All you'll have to do is empty the card machine of the bills, count them and deposit them in the bank. But if you have a coin laundry, you'll need to empty each machine, preferably daily. You'll want to pull (take out the coins) from one type of machine at a time so you can determine how often your customers are using each type of machine. Put a bag in one of your laundry baskets and roll it from machine to machine, starting with the top-loaders. Count these coins and record how much money you made on this type of machine, then follow the same procedure with the front-loaders and the dryers.

Even if you decide to hire employees and leave the customer relations to them, you still need good people skills to hire and supervise employees. The more closely you work with them and the better they know and like you, the better job they'll do. If you have an unattended laundry that you visit twice a day to clean and collect quarters, you still need to greet your customers with a smile on your face and an attitude that's ready to help. So if small talk with strangers leaves you cold, and you can't stand the thought of answering customers' questions (often the same ones over and over), the laundry business may not be the one for you.Whether you do all the work yourself or hire an attendant or a janitor, there are tasks you will need to take care of on a daily basis. You will need to open and close your store promptly each day, clean it, collect money, and fill vending and change machines. You will also need to keep track of which machines are being used and how often. Those laundry owners who have employees will have other duties, too. They'll be hiring and supervising those employees and overseeing additional services such as wash-and-fold. The Hours You Shall Keep Laundries are generally open between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. seven days per week. Because weekends are usually the busiest days for laundries, you should definitely keep your doors open on Saturdays and Sundays. In some instances, you may want to adopt alternate hours, especially if the market you serve or the location of your store lends itself to having open doors at other times of the day. Because his laundry is unattended, he doesn't have to pay employees to stay up all night with his store. You can avoid having to be at your store early in the morning and late at night by installing an automatic lock system on a timer. At night, of course, you must close down and lock up. If you want all the customers to be gone by 10 p.m., you should consider locking the door at 8:30 p.m.

In many areas around the country, municipal water districts charge sewer connection fees. These fees are a major challenge to laundry developers. And in areas where operators are forced to pay these fees, the price of laundromats has also risen dramatically. If the fees are high in your chosen area, you may need to reconsider your entire plan. In addition to sewer connection fees, you may find that you have to pay sewer and waste water fees, too-check with the local municipality. Don't neglect to check on these charges when you're researching a laundry business. After all, you will be using these utilities heavily, so you'll want to know if the monthly charges will be manageable from the get-go. The Goods If you decide to buy a laundry, you will already have a full complement of equipment-unless you want to replace a few of the older machines or add a few more machines to meet customer demand. However, if you decide to build a laundry, buying equipment will eat up virtually all the rest of your startup costs. For example, one store in San Francisco plays classic black-and-white movies on their TV, and the walls are covered with photographs of movie stars from the 1920s and 1930s. Another store in Texas displays the owner's collection of antique laundry equipment. A clever gimmick may also get you some free publicity from the local press. If you want to create a gimmick for your laundromat, think about who your customers are and what sort of theme they will appreciate. One owner in Southern California, with customers from all over Latin America, hung his laundry with flags from several of his customers' native homelands and started serving traditional Latin American food. Often, customers need to bring their children to the laundromat, so giving little ones something to do makes the laundry chore much easier on parents. Having an area set aside for children can also help keep them from running around and possibly getting hurt or damaging equipment.

Collette Clarkson and her partner have a play area for children. These professionals should be able to tell you how to design the area to maximize safety and make sure you won't be responsible in case a child gets hurt. In fact, you may need to place signs saying you're not responsible for children's safety. For the Big Kids Even adults will get bored at a laundromat. After all, mostly what they are doing is waiting around for clothes to wash and dry. Many laundries these days have one or more TVs mounted to the wall. Some laundries keep the TVs tuned to one channel, some play videos, and others let customers change the channels themselves. If your laundry is unattended and you want to let customers change the channel, mount the TV low enough on the wall so they can reach the channel and volume buttons. Customers are likely to walk off with a remote control, even if it's tacked to a table. Many laundry owners also have pinball and video games for their customers. Clarkson says a video game vendor approached her about having a videogame console in her store. They change the game every so often to keep customers from getting bored. Snack Time It's likely that your customers will get hungry and thirsty while they're waiting for their laundry to finish. Even if your store is near a shopping area, many customers wisely don't want to leave their clothes. So vending machines with sodas, chips and candy fit the bill. You can buy a vending machine, fill it yourself and take all the profits. Or you can contract with a vendor who will provide the machine and snacks and split the profits with you. Ask your distributor about vending companies in your area. Clarkson and her partner decided to put in a snack counter rather than vending machines. They offer their customers-and anyone else who comes in-a soda in a glass with ice, along with candy bars and chips. We’ll feature a different book each week and share exclusive deals you won’t find anywhere else.

For recording purposes, you should draw up a chart with seven rows, one for each day of the week, and columns for each type and size of equipment: top-loaders, front-loaders, dryers and vending machines. Then record in your chart how much money you withdraw every day. You should refill the change machine in your store on a daily basis, too. When it's empty, your customers can't do their laundry, and they'll go elsewhere. If it's empty more than a few times, they may never return. No one wants to lug several loads of laundry to a laundromat, only to find they can't get change. If you own your own soda and snack machines, you will need to make sure they're full every day. If you contract with a vending company, they'll worry about filling them. The most important vending machine in your store will likely be the soap vending machine, and since these machines are relatively inexpensive and rarely break, you should buy your own. Make sure it is properly stocked every day. Many customers will bring their own soap, but those who don't will expect to find soap available. An empty soap machine is almost as bad as an empty change machine-it will cause you to lose business. Keeping Track When you're done with the daily in-store duties, you'll need to take care of some additional office work. Many laundry owners do this at home, though some may find it easier to work in a rented office or at the laundromat if they have space. Owners with other businesses, such as De Coster who has both laundries and an equipment rental business, can take care of everything in one office. At your office, you'll need to take care of your accounting and track equipment usage by customers in your store. It's important to record how often each type of machine is used so that you can determine if you've got the right mix of equipment.

For example, if you find that your front-loaders are getting six turns per day (the number of times a machine is used each day) and your top-loaders only two, you may need to add front-loaders and remove some top-loaders. Your customers are likely waiting for the front-loaders and possibly going elsewhere, so you could be losing money. But you will have to pay for renovation and any new equipment you decide to install if you want to update the laundry. If you're buying an existing laundry, figuring out your major startup costs is simple-just determine the value of the business. If you plan to renovate the existing store by painting the interior or putting in new flooring, be sure to add these costs to your startup expenses. Figuring out your startup costs involves a little more work if you decide to build. Since you'll be leasing a space that was something other than a laundry in a previous life, the cost of the construction is going to depend on how much remodeling you have to do. If the space you've chosen was formerly a beauty salon, for example, you're going to have to add enough water, sewer and gas pipes for the conversion to a laundry. You'll also have to provide enough electrical outlets, possibly move a few walls, and completely redecorate before it will look like a laundromat. You should hire a contractor to help you do all this remodeling. This includes the cost of installing your equipment and putting in folding tables and seating. The remainder of your major startup costs will be buying the equipment itself. Licenses and Hidden Fees The licenses and permits you will need depend entirely on your location. Check with your municipality regarding: Business license Health department license (if you are serving food) Fire department permit Air and water pollution control permit Sign permit Public improvement fees Impact fees You should also be aware of a few lesser-known fees that will affect you as a laundry owner.

This book is a compilation of experiences, ideas and input from hundreds of successful coin laundry owners and distributors from all over the world. At the end of it, you will have a general understanding of the industry and what it will take to operate a successful business. If the equipment mix for your store isn’t just right, it can impact your profit potential as well as not meet the needs of your customers. With several considerations affecting the equipment mix, taking them all into consideration is equally important. This is also where your distributor partner will play a big role in guiding you through the equipment selection process. This is why making sure you have a solid business plan in place is so important when looking for financing as discussed in a previous chapter. If you do not achieve the maximum amount of capital you need to purchase the equipment, you could be limited on what you actually can purchase.? Other factors are the cost for things like freight and sales tax for the initial purchase, and installation costs. Many owners will wisely budget for a small inventory of spare parts and for preventive maintenance expense too. Just like with a vehicle or a house, taking care of your equipment can maximize its revenue producing life and that’s what it’s all about. It’s not uncommon for us to hear about pick up trucks running for 100,000 to 200,000 miles or for the washers and dryers we manufacture still running strong for 15 to 20 years.

The common denominator is preventive maintenance. If you are planning on ancillary services like drop off, wash and fold, sitting areas, an internet cafe, etc., you are reducing the amount of space you have for coin laundry equipment. And within the store, you need adequate room for your customers to move from entrance to washer to dryer to folding to exit. You’re going to want to consider the flooring requirements, the base mounting specifications, the sewer connections, water lines and sizes, maintenance access, air supply, venting, gas supply, voltage, amperage and phase requirements. All of this will play a role in your total initial expense and ultimately, what you purchase. When looking at the equipment you will again go back to your demographics to see who is living in the area you are serving. Are there young families. Are they working professionals. Is there a good deal of single family homes. All of these will play a role in equipment choice. For an area with a lot of single family homes rather than apartments and rental properties, a focus on larger capacity washers and tumblers might be a better way to go as that demographic tends to utilize coin laundry services for larger items like bedding and curtains. Working professionals spend a lot of time at their workplace and laundries offering a drop off service can be extremely attractive allowing these people to spend more of their limited free time with their families, even if they have a home style washer and dryer at home. If your customer base has a lot of senior citizens or students, the average amount of laundry they do every one to two weeks is smaller so having more smaller capacity washers is what they need and will seek out. In many areas, the apartment may have extended family living together. These people may be doing over 200 hundred pounds of laundry with every trip. But determining the optimum amount of each capacity is an important discussion to have with your authorized distributor.

We suggest going right to the source: The CUSTOMER. Look at developing a consumer survey to find out what things are important to them. Some questions to consider include: Hot? Cold? Warm? While we know you can’t be everything to everybody, making sure you have the equipment in your store to meet their needs will go a long way in developing customer loyalty. A copy of this information can be obtained through the Coin Laundry Association or your product distributor. Historically, the number one factor is “having enough high capacity machines available when you need them”. It’s interesting that “price” did not even make the Top 5. For some this means conserving our natural resources. For others, being green means saving money on utility expenses to add more “green” to the bottom line. To help control your costs and environmental impact, one way is through the equipment you choose. There is a lot of debate between top load versus front load washers, both with their own pros and cons. Depending on the washer, a front load washer can use as little as 1 gallon of water per pound of clothing, while the average top load washer uses around 2-3 gallons per pound. With rising energy costs, there has been a definite trend in this industry to use more frontload washers. However, many new and old stores alike still offer topload washers to satisfy their customers’ preferences. As a manufacturer, we are unique in that we manufacture the broadest product line in the industry including topload and front load washers in all of the capacities you need to meet customer preference and demand and to maximize your profitability. With all washers, they leave the factory with a default water level setting. However, for your specific situation and customer, this setting may use more or less water than you need. As the leading manufacturer of commercial laundry equipment worldwide, we know this and have designed our models with flexibility in programming.

Not all manufacturers give you this flexibility or if they do, it is limited. Some of our models offer up to 30 different water levels which allow you to find that specific balance to minimize your water usage and expense while meeting customer expectations. Again, water is used during the cleaning process, and this water must be removed by the end of the process. In the washer, after the clothes have been cleaned they go into a spin cycle to remove some of the water before the clothes are placed in a dryer. The dryer uses a heat source (commonly natural gas) to evaporate any remaining water in the laundry load. G-force refers to the spin speed of the washers in terms of gravity. The higher the G-force of a washer, the greater the amount of water removed from clothing, making them faster and easier to dry. Machines with an optional higher G-force will save you time and utility expense during the drying part of the laundry process. The initial cost is higher but depending on the customer traffic of your store, can deliver a payback with the first few years of operation. Your distributor can help you estimate this payback for your specific situation so that you can make an informed decision. To calculate the G-force on your own, it is rather easy.According to one source, a consumer will choose to use the hot water wash cycle 34 percent of the time, opting for warm water wash cycles 53 percent of the time and cold wash cycles only 13 percent of the time. Consider setting the hot setting at a lower temperature and encouraging the use of cold water washes. Many of our washer models give you the flexibility to charge less for a cold water wash and more for a hot water wash. This shares the benefit with your customers and everybody wins. This is where your distributor partner will play a large role in helping you determine what equipment you need and how much of what sizes and kinds.

Helping you meet your projected income, keep costs under control and meet the needs of your customers can appear to be a daunting task and that is why all through this book we stress finding the right distributor to counsel you through this process. And with so many variables the coin laundry owner faces — utility costs, meeting customer’s needs, larger capacity or smaller capacity — determining which type of washers to buy is difficult. Having all available information on front load washers compared to top load washers can make determining your product mix easier. With this information you can learn which washer style will meet your business objectives while satisfying the needs of your customers. With washers, a front load washer can cost up to 43 percent more than a traditional top load washer. Addressing this price difference is often one of the biggest decisions you as a coin laundry owner could face. But keep in mind, you need to weigh which issues are important to you. If it’s lower utility costs, you can often re-coup the initial extra expense through the savings you’ll have in energy and water costs. However, if the cost of lots of front load washers is still too steep for you, there are top load washers on the market that offer water saving features. With ever-increasing energy consumption and water standards, laundry manufacturers are continuously improving their equipment to meet them. Up to 55 percent more depending on the brand and model. It’s because of this difference in water and energy that you see more coin laundry owners being attracted to front load washers. As the standards continue to change, it will become harder for the conventional top load washer to meet the requirements without significant enhancements. And as those changes are made, it will make the cost benefit of a top load washer much less significant. Front load washers are thought to clean better, particularly on stains; they are also gentler on fabric than top load washers.

    coin counterinsurgency manual

The circumstances of the global war on terrorism, in which the US military became involved in multiple more or less simultaneous counterinsurgency campaigns, has led to a superb capture of doctrine in time for it to be used on the battlefield. For a military manual, it is surprisingly readable, and it is a superb exploration of just what an insurgency is and how it might be suppressed. The Manual explores the proper characterization of insurgencies, the challenges of unity of effort, timely intelligence, and the design and execution of counterinsurgency campaigns. It deals with the tricky topics of host nation training, logistics, battlefield ethics, and airpower support. As such, I will try to articulate where I felt the text falls short compared to other available texts on counterinsurgency. This would have been a helpful visual tool for COIN forces on the ground to quickly diagnose where the power is in the AO and how to engage the target population through the avenues of the pre-established political culture (all of which the text emphasizes in spades). Including more of these (including explicit bad examples that show errors in preexisting COIN logic) would have been extremely helpful. As such, I highly recommend this book. To fill in the above three gaps, I would recommend David Kilcullen's But in my work, as a competitive strategy analyst engaging with NGO and activist organizations, having a good understanding of this book can be an asset, especially so given that many of the organizations I study have written that they have used this manual to inform their own strategies.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. So long as the insurgency maintains popular support, it will retain all of its strategic advantages of mobility, invisibility, and legitimacy in its own eyes and the eyes of the people. So long as this is the situation, an insurgency essentially cannot be defeated by regular forces. His theory of counterinsurgency is not primarily military, but a combination of military, political and social actions under the strong control of a single authority. The population must be efficiently protected to allow it to cooperate without fear of retribution by the opposite party. This must be done area by area, using a pacified territory as a basis of operation to conquer a neighboring area. Replace the softs and the incompetents, give full support to the active leaders. Organize self-defense units. 7. Group and educate the leaders in a national political movement. Substantive security, political and economic measures are critical but to be effective they must rest upon, and integrate with a broader information strategy.Similarly, too much security assistance without political consensus or governance simply creates more capable armed groups.Regardless of whether the child started the fight or how well armed the child is, an adult in a fight with a child will feel that he is acting unjustly if he harms the child and foolish if the child harms him; he will, therefore, wonder if the fight is necessary. Tru?ng Chinh, second in command to Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam, wrote in his Primer for Revolt:To protract the war is the key to victory. Why must the war be protracted?. If we throw the whole of our forces into a few battles to try to decide the outcome, we shall certainly be defeated and the enemy will win. On the other hand, if while fighting we maintain our forces, expand them, train our army and people, learn military tactics.

COIN strategy aims to achieve the support of the local population for the government created by the host nation.Counter-insurgency operations include many different facets: military, paramilitary, political, economic, psychological, and civic actions taken to defeat insurgency.Insurgents capitalize on societal problems, often called gaps; counter-insurgency addresses closing the gaps. This may be attributed to a number of causes. First, as B. H. Liddell Hart pointed out in the Insurgency addendum to the second version of his book Strategy: The Indirect Approach, a popular insurgency has an inherent advantage over any occupying force. He showed as a prime example the French occupation of Spain during the Napoleonic wars. Whenever Spanish forces managed to constitute themselves into a regular fighting force, the superior French forces beat them every time.Napoleon 's army had no means of effectively combatting the rebels, and in the end, their strength and morale were so sapped that when Wellington was finally able to challenge French forces in the field, the French had almost no choice but to abandon the situation.Though the Ottomans often had advantages in manpower of more than 100 to 1, the Arabs ' ability to materialize out of the desert, strike, and disappear again often left the Turks reeling and paralyzed, creating an opportunity for regular British forces to sweep in and finish the Turkish forces off.Such was also the case with the French Resistance during World War II and the National Liberation Front during the Vietnam War. The strategy in these cases is for the irregular combatant to weaken and destabilize the enemy to such a degree that victory is easy or assured for the regular forces. However, in many modern rebellions, one does not see rebel fighters working in conjunction with regular forces. Rather, they are home-grown militias or imported fighters who have no unified goals or objectives save to expel the occupier.

The longer you wait, the more inured the population will be to bloodshed, and the more barbaric your action will have to be to make an impression. Afterwards, make sure that as many people as possible know of your strike; media is useful for this purpose, but be careful not to let them interview survivors and arouse sympathy. Specifically, the impossible trilemma suggests that it is impossible to simultaneously achieve: 1) force protection, 2) distinction between enemy combatants and noncombatants, and 3) the physical elimination of insurgents. In particular, a state can protect its armed forces while destroying insurgents, but only by indiscriminately killing civilians as the Ottomans, Italians, and Nazis did in the Balkans, Libya, and Eastern Europe. It can choose to protect civilians along with its own armed forces instead, avoiding so-called collateral damage, but only by abandoning the objective of destroying the insurgents. Finally, a state can discriminate between combatants and noncombatants while killing insurgents, but only by increasing the risks for its own troops, because often insurgents will hide behind civilians, or appear to be civilians. So a country must choose two out of three goals and develop a strategy that can successfully accomplish them, while sacrificing the third objective.Within the contemporary context, COIN warfare by African militaries tends to be at the margins of the theoretical debate - even though Africa today is faced with a number of deadly insurgencies. In Counter-insurgency in Nigeria, Omeni, a Nigerian academic, discusses the interactions between certain features away from the battlefield, which account for battlefield performance against insurgent warfare. Specifically, Omeni argues that the trio of historical experience, organisational culture (OC) and doctrine, help explain the institution of COIN within militaries and their tendency to reject the innovation and adaptation often necessary to defeat insurgency.

Once such superior intelligence is gained, the counterinsurgents must be trained to a point of high professionalism and discipline such that they will exercise discrimination and restraint. Through such discrimination and restraint, the counterinsurgents do not alienate members of the populace besides those already fighting them, while delaying the time when the counterinsurgents become disgusted by their own actions and demoralized. In contrast and using very rough figures, the struggle in Northern Ireland had cost the United Kingdom three thousand casualties in dead alone. Of the three thousand, about seventeen hundred were civilians.of the remaining, a thousand were British soldiers. In 1982, the regime of Syrian president Hafez al-Assad was on the point of being overwhelmed by the countrywide insurgency of the Muslim Brotherhood.Asked by reporters what had happened, Hafez al-Assad exaggerated the damage and deaths, promoted the commanders who carried out the attacks, and razed Hama's well-known great mosque, replacing it with a parking lot. With the Muslim Brotherhood scattered, the population was so cowed that it would be years before opposition groups dared to disobey the regime again and, van Creveld argues, the massacre most likely saved the regime and prevented a bloody civil war. When pressed to cruelty, never threaten your opponent but disguise your intention and feign weakness until you strike. If another strike is needed, it reduces the impact of the first strike. Repeated strikes will also endanger the morale of the counterinsurgent troops; soldiers forced to commit repeated atrocities will likely begin to resort to alcohol or drugs to force themselves to carry out orders and will inevitably lose their military edge, eventually turning into a danger to their commanders. More lives will be saved by decisive action early, than by prolonging the insurgency.

Additionally, counterinsurgency efforts need to understand the culture of which the insurgency resides, in order to strategically launch information and communication operations against the insurgent ideology or religion.Counterinsurgency operations must be able to perceive the world from the locals’ perspective. Counterinsurgency communication efforts need a baseline understanding of values, attitudes, and perceptions of the people in the area of operations to conduct successful public diplomacy to defeat the enemy. In order to conduct public diplomacy through these means, counterinsurgency communication needs to match its deeds with its words. Information provided through public diplomacy during a counterinsurgency cannot lie, the information and communication to the people always has to be truthful and trustworthy in order to be effective at countering the insurgents. Public diplomacy in counterinsurgency to influence the public thoughts and ideas is a long time engagement and should not be done through negative campaigning about the enemy. The use of public diplomacy to strategically relay the correct messages and information to the public is essential to success in a counterinsurgency operation. For example, close relationships with media members in the area is essential to ensure that the locals understand the counterinsurgency objectives and feel secure with the host nation government and the counterinsurgency efforts. If the local media is not in sync with the counterinsurgency operatives then they could spread incomplete or false information about the counterinsurgency campaign to the public.Conventional warfare using massive fire-power and failure to implement adequate counter-insurgency had extremely negative effects and was the strategy whom the NVA were adept at countering through the protracted political and military warfare model.

This was alongside the brutal and oftentimes badly implemented civilian-assassination program Phoenix Program targeting Viet Cong civilian personnel. These reasons were contributing factors to the U.S failure as it had become too late by then. They followed Hurgronje 's suggestions, finding cooperative uleebelang or secular chiefs that would support them in the countryside and isolating the resistance from their rural support base.Westerling ordered the registration of all Javanese arriving in Makassar due to the large numbers of Javanese participating in the Sulawesi resistance. At daybreak, the operation began, often led by Westerling. Men would be separated from women and children. From the gathered information Westerling exposed certain people as terrorists and murderers. They were shot without any further investigation. He succeeded in eliminating the insurgency and undermining local support for the Republicans. His actions restored Dutch rule in southern Sulawesi. However, the Netherlands East Indies government and the Dutch army command soon realised that Westerling's notoriety led to growing public criticism. In April 1947 the Dutch government instituted an official inquiry of his controversial methods. Raymond Westerling was put on the sidelines. He was relieved of his duties in November 1948.See Wikipedia's guide to writing better articles for suggestions. ( February 2020 ) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message ) In these missions, the SOF teams lived and fought with the locals. One Laotian, who became an officer, was Vang Pao, who was to become a general in Hmong and Laotian operations in Southeast Asia while the US forces increased their role. The 1957 Battle of Algiers resulted in 24,000 detentions, with most tortured and an estimated 3,000 killed. This contributes to the difficulty that foreign, as opposed to indigenous, powers have in counter-insurgent operations. One of France's most influential theorists was Roger Trinquier.

These three features, furthermore, influence and can undermine the operational tactics and concepts adopted against insurgents. The COIN challenge, therefore, is not just operational; it also is cultural and institutional before ever it reflects on the battlefield. As Omeni writes,At best, the utility of force, for the Nigerian military, had become but a temporary solution against the threat of insurgent warfare. At worst, the existing model has been perpetuated at such high cost, that urgent revisionist thinking around the idea of counter-insurgency within the military institution may now be required. Additionally, the military’s decisive civil war victory, the pivot in Nigeria’s strategic culture towards a regional role, and the institutional delegitimization brought about by decades of coups and political meddling, meant that much time went by without substantive revisionism to military’s thinking around its internal function. Certainly, therefore, the popular argument today, which holds that the Nigerian Army has struggled in COIN due to capabilities shortcomings, holds some merit. However, a full-spectrum analysis of the Nigeria case suggests that this popular dominant narrative scarcely scratches the surface of the true COIN challenge. This population-centered challenge, moreover, is one that militaries across the world continue to contend with.Information can be acquired from civilian sources (human intelligence, HUMINT ), or through signals intelligence ( SIGINT ).In other words, relocation deprives the aforementioned of the support, cover, and resources of the local population. These measures proved ineffective, since Ph?m Ng?c Th?o, who oversaw the program, was a communist agent and sabotaged the implementation of the hamlets. It is used in urban neighborhoods. The purpose of the mission is to search a house with as little inconvenience to the resident family as possible.

The goal of COIN operations is to render the insurgents as ineffective and non-influential, by having strong and secure relations with the population of the host nation.Public diplomacy in COIN warfare is only effective when there is a clear understanding of the culture and population at hand. One of the largest factors needed for defeating an insurgency involves understanding the populace, how they interact with the insurgents, how they interact with non-government organizations in the area, and how they view the counterinsurgency operations themselves.Insurgents win their war by attacking internal will and the international opposition. In order to combat these tactics the counterinsurgency operations need to treat their prisoners and detainees humanely and according to American values and principles. By doing this, COIN operations show the host nation's population that they can be trusted and that they are concerned about the well being of the population in order to be successful in warfare. These programs are designed to make the local population feel secure, safe, and more aligned with the counterinsurgency efforts; this enables the citizens of the host nation to trust the goals and purposes of the counterinsurgency efforts, as opposed to the insurgents’. A counterinsurgency is a battle of ideas and the implementation and integration of these programs is important for success. Social, political and economic programs should be coordinated and administered by the host nation's leaders, as well. Successful COIN warfare allows the population to see that the counterinsurgency efforts are including the host nation in their re-building programs. The war is fought among the people and for the people between the insurgents and the counterinsurgents.A counterinsurgency is a competition of ideas, ideologies, and socio-political movements. In order to combat insurgent ideologies one must understand the values and characteristics of the ideology or religion.

The Modern Warfare counterinsurgency strategy described by Trinquier, who had led anti-communist guerrillas in Indochina, was a strong influence on French efforts in Algeria.Massu and General Raoul Salan led a 1958 coup in Algiers, demanding a new Republic under Charles de Gaulle. When de Gaulle's policies toward Algeria, such as a 1961 referendum on Algerian self-determination, did not meet the expectations of the colonial officers, Salan formed the underground Organisation armee secrete (OAS), a right-wing terrorist group, whose actions included a 1962 assassination attempt against de Gaulle himself.Military operations against the group occur predominantly in the far north-east areas of Nigeria. The Kashmir insurgency, which started by 1989, was brought under control by Indian government and violence has been reduced. A branch of the Indian Army known as the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) was created for the sole purpose of destroying the insurgency in Kashmir, and it has played a major role in doing so. The RR was well supported by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and state government police. In the counterinsurgency, disciplined application of force is even more critical because our enemies camouflage themselves in the civilian population. They need your skill. He explained that irregular warfare included counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, sabotage and subversion, as well as stabilization and information operations. It had traditionally been perceived as a predominately counterterrorism (CT) effort used to fight violent extremist organizations, but that under the IWA the skills will be applied to all areas of military competition. The former may be likened to water the latter to the fish who inhabit it. All lessons learned on COIN are corrupted by the policies and purposes of the times they occur in, but provide insights into strategic understanding. Move away from definitions based on degree of violence, type of ideology, or status of parties. No single COIN approach works for all, but blended, evolving approaches tailored for each can be very effective (and in many ways occurred during “the surge” in Iraq, but not during “the surge” in Afghanistan, with predictable results). The blend of perceptions of US physical and policy “presence” driving resistance against the US among populaces also feeling internal revolutionary motivations toward their own governments is central to the past 20 years of turmoil. Al-Qaeda conducts UW to leverage this energy and cannot exist without it. One which finds.

This, so as to We ignore this basic pre-requisite and rely on American Exceptionalism to carry the day. We do not fail because we are not smart or do not work hard, or because of our system. We fail because we refuse to appreciate the problem for what it actually is, as that leads to perspectives that are very inconvenient to the solutions we wish to impose. Our theories of how the world works aren't referenced- in doctrine or otherwise- and therefore are just assertions. We have conventional wisdom, the people who have influence, and the people who shout the loudest. FM 3-24, like most of the doctrine I've worked on, was heavily, if not wholly, influenced from the top and what little the bottom got in was accepted more through surrender than any compelling reasoning. It is just that to me, breathing Leavenworth air, we are wed to a habit of defining abstract terms too soon before they have a place and time. Do we agree that it would generally be better to study a specific situation well, and, irrespective of abstract categories, decide what steps to take toward achieving our goals. Our act of selecting and defining terms is itself an act of strategy-making equal in influence to our consideration of ends, ways, and means. If we become too rigid with our start-words, our strategy options are canalized and our tactical competence can, if our strategic lexicography were wrong, be forfeited. How is that? The ball game on Tuesday was a dog of a game; Wednesday’s a little better, thanks partly to the rhubarb. Go Royals. Insurgency is rooted in human nature, and cares little what American generals, doctrine writers, or think tank pundits want it to be. When one invades, deposes, creates new illegitimate government and stays to defend it, one ends up dealing with a devil's brew of both in equal measure. Heart of the blog stuff. As most of you are aware, I’m generally anti-FM 3-24, anti-COIN.

I think we should leave the definition of counterinsurgency at countering insurgency, and leave the definition of insurgency to civilian lexicographers as they see it evolve in common usage. Few wars are completely internal, and, from what I can tell, as soon as any foreign intervention happens, a contest immediately becomes some sort of mixture. I’ve got to go with Dave M. here that we should not separate doctrine and manuals for COIN, FID, SFA and Stability Operations. I think we should take each conflict as its own category of conflict, and consider early and recurrently what it is that we wish to prevent, stop or punish, and who the perpetrators are. One more snipe: I think even looking at its appearances in this very thread, the word legitimacy is exposed as a weak vessel. I think it is used more than a 170 times in the last insurgency-counterinsurgency manual -- inconsistently at that. Let's have a moratorium on the use of that word; it has become an excuse and an argument more than a guide and a goal. This is not yet within our risk paradigm, and we continue to fail in support of answers we think best for us. I am in broad agreement. The point you make about 'containment' COIN is a very good one. I think that we (the west ) need to recognise that the strategic ends of what I term 'second-party counterinsurgency' (ie, 'interventionist' COIN) are far closer (but not 100% aligned) with the tenets of the 'imperial policing' era (need to get over our hang ups with the term) than the 'counterinsurgency era'. In many cases ( dare I say most) our stargeic interest has nothing to do with nation building and everything to do with the maintenance of some form of status quo that we believe to be in our interests. Defeating insurgency, rather than decades long dubious efforts at nation building will normally suffice for our strategic purposes.

I also agree with the point that Dave M made about the utility of the previous FM's dogma being incorporated into a JP (or something similar). Reference a JP for COIN. There is a JP 3-24 from 2009 that is supposed to provide the below listed points and interestingly the executive summary alone is 15 or so pages of the 240 page document and has such interesting little points such as this on page xvii. Internal defense and development (IDAD) is the HN’s plan that US FID supports; the HN does not support the US FID plan.Interestingly FM3-24 is only specifically referenced twice in the text of the pub and once in the list of service publications. Now, I personally cannot imagine a type of insurgency where one would send Brigade as the core unit to design a response around. In many ways though, this seemed to be the framing parameter for discussion. I believe the Army is correct that Brigade and Battalion Commanders need an effective, practical guide that they can pull off the shelf 10-20 years from now when little expereince is resident in their unit, and have a start point for developing and guiding a COIN campaign. I think the current FM serves a much larger, broader role, and that it has problems that should be addressed and that it should be republished to continue to serve that larger role. Perhaps that requires the manual be renamed as the Joint Pub. Or as some other category of document, maybe. If asked, I would say produce the new overarching COIN document first, then once that is done, nest under it a practical guide such as the Army is planning that can then focus on that narrow aspect of insurgency that Brigades engage without risking that we somehow imply that that is all that insurgency is, or the only way to deal with one. The ISI are getting touchy about too much Dupont fertilizer (never noticed it before but it on the bag it got USAID in big letters) around Miram Shah so we stop at Truk and get ten bags.

I have changed the arcade monitor, replaced the sound system and added a new marquee and art work. I am using the golden tee board and have set it all via an arcade vga conector to the board from pc. I am using a ke72-t hagstrom encoder. The coin door has a klingson validator UK v3.2 ?? I am having a few issues in the following areas that i need help with to complete project please bear with me as this might be a bit lengthy. 1. I am wanting to get 3 rectangle led lit buttons as admin controls on the top of my yet to be designed control panel. My problem is this how do I light the buttons.I am wanting to use this with mame and make the cabinet as realistic as possible I dont want to have a coin button on the control panel I feel that would spoil all the fun. My problems with this are: 1. Will the coin door recognise different coins being used in mame hope that makes sense. For example if I put a 50p coin in the machine will it give me 3 credits or just recognise it as 1 coin 1 credit regardless of value of coin? 2. How do I connect this to my hagstrom encoder. Can you recommend a program that is easy to use that will allow me to design a panel and be in a format that I can send off to be cut to size with something like a cnc router im thinking cad may be the only choice for this but am thinking that this programme is 1 very expensive to buy just for what i require doing and 2 very hard and complex to use. I will also need a company that cuts these designs and plexiglass that will go over it. And finally I hope what software is best for designing art work for control panels. Sorry if iv waffled on guys just so many issues that i need to resolve in order to finally get this beast working iv had it nearly 2 years and the mrs is about ready to throw it out so need answers.

Many thanks Hope you can help Sorry if that doesnt make much sense im getting a bit confused here. My aims are to select a game and put different ammounts of cash in getting varying credits ie 30p 1 credit, 50p 3 credits etc. I want it to feel as close to an original arcade as possible. I dont want to have to tinker around with every game setting if it can be helped. Also does anyone know if the 12v will go through my encoder? Also push buttons arrived this morning the company said they dont make custom inlays for the buttons any more. Any ideas who would. I want ithe 3 buttons to say: 1. Start Game 2. Emulator Select 3. End Game Also added very basic diagram, is this what you mean Grant re set up: I want ithe 3 buttons to say: 1. Start Game 2. Emulator Select 3. End Game do what I did, I printed it out The important thing that we need to find out is what the pulse is coming from the Klingson acceptor. Is it just a contact closure or is a a logic level pulse. Generally it is a relay contact closure which would be fine to connect directly to the KE72 Input pins. The best place to start is with a data sheet. Do you have a data sheet on the device. Cheers guys Could you do a diagram please? They are very economical and look fantastic! Another reply from Hagstrom: Yes, our board will accept a 5v logic level pulse on the input pins. Based on your earlier information, it appears that the Klingon is powered from a 12 volt source. The question is what is the voltage level of the output pulse. It seems strange that it too is 12 volts. That seems unlikely, but can someone use a meter to verify that. coin comparitor cc-16e manual

To add to the confusion, there have been multiple improvements made over the years by Coin Controls and there are different board designs out there - even though, they may carry the same root part number. Some are off the shelf versions, some are custom builds for each manufacturers application. As to inhibit or no inhibit, that also depends on the application or the parts used to assemble the board. Some CC's might require another wire (besides power and ground) to tell it it's okay to accept coins, or say, it's not okay right now. With power off, all coins were rejected back to the customer. Later, the CC was used to replace this old design but without major changes to the machines design (plug and play if you will). This, of course wasn't the best way to do this as once you removed power from the Coin comparator, there was a small amount of time where residual power still allowed coins to be accepted. CJ Jay Re: Coin comparitor difference CC16D VS.If you have a CC16 that is non inhibit. The theory being that the absence of inhibit capability won't impact basic funcationality. Is it safe to assume that all new platforms would likely use a inhibit capable model ? The Non Inhibit versions merely had a jumper in place so the coil always had a potential path to ground (under control of the validation circuitry alone). So, to answer your question, a Non Inhibit model would be functioning all the time, regarless of the signal from the host machine. The only problem I could see would be Coin Tilt if a coin were inserted in the machine when the Computer didn't expect to see any because it was Inhibited. And yes, I would expect that most newer platforms would take advantage of the Inhibit function but it all depend on the design engineer's choice at time of design. CJ uniman Re: Coin comparitor difference CC16D VS. Thanks Cactusjack Re: Coin comparitor difference CC16D VS. Depending on how it is internally populated with various components, it can serve multiple applications (AC or DC, 12, 24, 48V, Inhibit, no inhibit etc.) Some models can even serve multiple applications (various input voltages) depending on which pin power gets applied to etc.

If the machine does not support an inhibit function then a comparitor with the inhibit function would reject all coins because it would not be getting a signal from the machine to allow it to accept coins. The only time I would try this would be if I had a house full of people and the Comparitor went dead on me and I had to cobble together a solution fast I'll keep this thread bookmarked. CJ, could a non-inhibited unit be easily converted to an inhibited one by severing the jumper and adding a couple of wires to re-route the ground return as the inhibited model does. It's best done when the machine hits its 100 game cycle and times out for a moment. At that time you can dump as many coins as you can feed within about 0.5 seconds. I'm not sure of the cutoff. I know for certain that it will pay back 5 coins on my machines and not tilt. Somewhere between there and 10 coins it tilts. When it does you actually lose some of the coins-in because the machine never pays them back after the tilt is cleared. Keep in mind that to get 5 coins back you have to over-bet 5 coins which usually means putting in 8 coins. To get 10 extras in there requires 13 on most games. Half the fun is to have a big stack of quarters poised against the coin-in slot and to see just how fast I can feed them in. OK, you may now beat me with a wet noodle. The only problem is that the term Coin Comparator uses is actual backwards from the function. They call it Inhibit but it would be more correctly called ENABLE as to how the function actually works - which is why your statement is correct about using an Inhibit mech in a machine that does not support the inhibit signal - it should not accept anything - EVER. Also, Concerning the 14volts verses 24 volts. Keep in mind, they are actually 14VDC and 24VAC. So, while you could feed DC voltage into the 24VAC model, you CANNOT feed 24VAC into the 14VDC model without frying it.

CJ Thanks for the info CJ. Older Universals use a Non-Inhibit CC-16 and runs the ground to the MPU board where it is switched by a transistor to ground or open circuit. Max coin played or open the door and circuit opens. Power does slowly fade as you say. Universal does allow one extra coin to be played and counts it to the next spin. Two extra and you tilt. Also, I see the CC-16 has the capability of providing a -6V reference to comparitor ground output signal. What type machine utilizes this. Cactusjack Re: Coin comparitor difference CC16D VS. There is a setting as to whether it can be added to the Credit meter (as 1 coin inserted for next play) or, if it has to pay it immediately out of the hopper. And yes, 2 coins in with CC off give a coin tilt. Don't know anything about a -6 volt reference. Don't know how they could even get that except on AC models. CJ I haven't a clue to which specific model, no schematics either, saw it listed in an Installation Instructions page. This signal is provided upon acceptance of a good coin, which is triggered by the sensing circuit.I understand that plugging in a 13 V CC into a 24 V system is not good, seen the thread on that one Now to my question: Do I need to make sure that I always use an inhibit CC in my machines?? Does the game prom control the cc if a inhibit. If a no inhibit cc, all control is in the cc. So if you have a unit that says inhibit then I would replace it with the same kind. And as you pointed out it must be the same voltage. The discussion however seems to point that a Machine that supports inhibit could possibly use a comparitor that does not say inhibit. My understanding is that when the machine activates the inhibit-or circuit it rejects coins. By using a comparitor that does not say inhibit this feature would not reject coins when it is supposed to and if somone dropped a coin in when the machine was not expecting it you would get a coin-in error (tilt). The reverse is not true.

Your wealth of knowledge and experience is such a great asset to this site. My printed copy looked like negative, checked the pdf file I printed it from and it is positive. Makes more sense, I don't remember anyone saying they had an AC powered comparitor. The CC-16 Installation Instructions came with my Universal Manual. It is dated late 80's, so these instructions may not apply to later versions of the CC-16. I read on a different thread that green wires to the coil means 12V or maybe 13V and gray 24V. Yet the instructions say you can wire it for different voltages. And then there's red power lights and green power lights. I think I'll follow Jay's and CJ's advice and just stick to what is meant to be there. If your device uses DC, you will have to convert AC to DC, and then filter it. Filter Caps cost money. So, if you can drive something off AC, you don't need your power supply to need to handle the voltage and current to drive the device. This is the case with Lamps and Coils. Instead, you use Triacs (or sometimes SCRs) as your driver device instead of Transistors (or MosFets) which is what you would use to drive a DC device. This way, the device is driven straight off the Transformer and you don't have to take into account the current draw when designing your system power supply. Or, worse yet, have to buy a really expensive high current regulated power supply. As time went by, Switching power supplies became less expensive, and more reliable. And in some cases, the on board regulators were replace with external Switchers. They did this with a cool little Switching regulator and a choke which now only requires minimal filter caps (lowering the cost). No more big expensive Filter Caps, and now, the regulation is done with switching frequency and not through Linear Regulation who's by-product is always HEAT (the unneed power has to go somewhere).

And, yes, the Sense signal does exist and is used by the ABC optic PCB in an IGT machine to set up the timing for Anti Stringing. This is why a part must be defeated when someone installs a mechanical Coin Mech in place of the coin comparator (like an Imonex Mech). It defeats the timing circuit since there is no ACCEPT signal to start the Anti Stringing Timing if there is no Coin Comparator installed. I just didn't know the spec for the signal was considered -6 VDC in reference to the coin comparator ground signal. STATFREAK, it is good to know that some SP software will tollerate more than just 2 errant coins entering the machine when the coin comparator should be disabled. That is why the game stops totally responding to any push of the button etc. But, since the Coin Comparator should be Disabled at this moment, it should not be an issue. And, if coins do sneak by, I would guess they are never seen since the CPU is off doing something else at the time, and therefore, should not cause a Coin in TILT. Now you can slap me with the Wet Noodle. CJ StatFreak Re: Coin comparitor difference CC16D VS. At least 6 or so. And it does tilt after the EPROM write if I put too many coins in. I think the actions are recorded on the stack and processed after the write is competed. When I drop the coins in the machine does nothing (no ding etc) at the time just as you describe because the CPU is occupied. All of the coin-in dings, credits displayed, coins returned, and tilt messages, occur after the CPU restarts processing IO requests again. I believe that the reason that the extra coins that cause the tilt are not accounted for is not because the CPU was occupied but because of an overflow error (which causes the tilt in the first place). Of course, I could be wrong. Then you could slap me with a dry noodle. (But I'd make you pick up the broken pieces afterwards ) uniman Re: Coin comparitor difference CC16D VS.

If your 16-E has the Inhibit function (look for INH on the label) then you do need to connect the bottom pin on the comparitor to the ground. I just spliced the lead from the INH connector pin (bottom pin) to the ground wire coming off the top pin of the connector.Seeing a homemade machine do its thing is satisfying. Keep us posted on your progress. My son fashioned a chute, and we have been feeding dimes through it all day. We are having a large problem, though. We are using a clad dime as the reference coin, so the sliver dimes should be rejected. However, the silvers and half the clad coins are going into the reject bin, and half the clad coins are going into the accept bin. So then we feed the reject bin contents into the hopper, and we get the same thing - silvers and half the clads get rejected, and half of the clads which were rejected before are now accepted. We've tried monkeying around with the potentiometer, but that only marginally helps. Any ideas? By the way, thanks so much for taking the time out to help a fellow CRH.This way the clad will roll down the gate. ( this way the solenoid doesn't work as hard). The gate will shift only when the wanted coin goes through the coils. As for tuning the unit, there's not much to it. You can download the directions for it. One thing to remember is they say use a dc meter but you use an ac meter for tuning it. Or should I say the AC mode. The pot on the front just loosens up the discrimination. Too tight you will miss silver. Too loose you will have to search through some clad. Error on the loose side you won't miss silver. NovapaxWhen I started sorting dimes the comparitor was erratic, somewhat similar to what you are describing. I couldn't get the dime to stay against the back surface of the slot it was in. I finally folded a piece of plastic coin roll that the dimes come in and stuffed it into the slot. The folded plastic held the dime in place and cleared up the errattic sorting.I also have a MC-62 (inhlo).

The light turns solid red only on this one, but it will not separate my coins. Where am I going wrong, or what should I be looking into. Any help is greatly appreciated! Did you miss your activation email ? Your NLG Staff. No error code is displayed. I have to remove the coin(s) manually. Once I've done that the machine works fine. And I can use the coin(s) that were jammed without any problem. Does this sound like a problem with the comparitor (model CC-16E) or something else? Gary It moves from side to side and has a weight on it (in the form of a screw). If you just apply some wd40 on that, it will no longer jam. It pays for costs and keeps this site alive. Dirt from the coins and hands can get inside the comparitor. I?ve had some that were sticky from a spilled drink. And remember. If it's jammed, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways. This weight just screws onto the lever, they are made so you can install different gram weights, depending on the coin that will be used. If this coin comparator was originally made for use with a coin heavier than a quarter the weight may be a little too heavy. You can remove it by simply unscrewing it with your fingers from the lever and see if the problem goes away. With the weight removed the lever will drop to its lower position so coins won't get stuck but the lever will still guide the coin correctly to the sensor. As you can see in the attached document below they made a wide variety of weights for that lever. These coin comparitors get removed and reinstalled into different machines over the years, sometimes you have one that was originally in a machine that used a different coin denomination. Or it may be the original comparitor for the machine but the machine was converted from one coin denom to a different one. Thanks! By placing the Regulator ON the CPU board, you don't get problems with voltage loss through connectors and wiring like you would if you just used a PC type power supply to drive the whole cabinet. Just a little insight on what a board designer goes through when selecting what direction to take when having to interface to the outside world. The CC-16 was designed or adapted to be used in place of it, and therefore had to be able to run off 24VAC. But, they also planned ahead and designed the CC-16 with various ways to be built so it could be used in a number of applications - not just running off 24 VAC which few electronic products actually have available in their design. Although it does produce a ton of Heat, it can even be used in an older Bally Machine with 48V going to the lockout coil. And yes, depending on what components they loaded the CC-16 board with, it can accept multiple types and amounts of voltage (AC and DC, 12 - 48VDC) But, it all depends on the Model number and which connector pin you place the power to. Armed with the Schematic, and the right components, you can convert them back and forth as needed. But due to their low Used product pricing, its just not worth the bother. Disassembling the shock absorber also offers a chance for inspection and service to the shock. However, disassembling of the shock absorbers can only be performed by certified professional technicians. Components that shall be truly secured are: nuts, nuts on eye, upper holder, bracket holder, bolts with horn adjuster (if supplied), and any other parts. Be sure to tighten bolts on upper holder and angular tube of bracket holder. Do not attempt to disassemble this product or put it in the vicinity of fire to avoid the risk of serious explosion. Do not install this product if it is found having been disassembled before. In addition, this product cannot be modified for any reason. In addition this may cause damage to the product. However, if it must be turned with force, ensure that it is turned with low torque and be sure that the cylinder hasn't been turned. Some shock absorbers do not contain boots due to space limitation for a boot. For the product without a boot, we suggest the surface of the cylinder be cleaned regularly and check the shock periodically to ensure the performance and increase the lifespan of the product. Before installation, please read the instructions carefully. This shock absorbers may not be compatible with the upper holder of other brands. To protect against damage, be sure to note the torque applied for turning. Adjust it with the adjustment level. To prevent sticking of the spring holder, we suggest that the components be checked and serviced periodically. If not, it could cause damage to the vehicle. Please insert brake hose to rounded rubber and put the rounded rubber into the groove of washer. Shown as the picture. Please make an adjustment in ride height and length of strut by carrying out the following steps.

These approximate height adjustments are exactly that—approximate. You will need to re-adjust the suspension to your desired ride height once the coil-over install is complete. Lift the damper kit through the underside of the chassis into position where the studs go through the OEM bolt-holes on the strut tower mount. Thread the nuts till you can see at least two threads past the top of the nut from the stud on the damper kit, but do not tighten. This will allow an ample amount of movement in the suspension system to help align the lower hardware. It is important to tighten all suspension bolts with the suspension loaded by the vehicle. Without doing so, the bushings may bind, cause noises and worse yet, premature bushing wear. Torque the nuts on the top of the damper assembly to vehicle specifications and then toque the bolt at the bottom of the damper to vehicle specifications as well. If there were any brake lines or anything affixed to the rear coil-over assembly, mount them securely. It would be best to at least roll the car forward and back a few times to allow the suspension to settle. Driving the car up and down the street will create the same affect, allowing the suspension bolts to settle in place to give you the true ride height. Make all adjustments to the suspension system as you desire. NOTE: Camber plates are only included in some Macpherson strut applications. Adjust the ride height to the same setting on both the left and right side of the car. Adjust the damper setting on the suspension to your desired rate. Adjust the setting by tightening the knob all the way till it stops, and then turning back the knob From there plus or minus off the dampening settings. Any time you remove or even loosen a suspension component such as control arms and especially when replacing the suspension, the alignment will be thrown out of specification.

Make sure you support the car at the specified jacking points on the chassis, indicated in the vehicle owner’s instruction manual. As a recommended safety precaution, it is a good idea to place the wheels underneath the vehicle, along the side skirt area in case of jack stand failure. You will be re-using some OEM hardware with the damper kit to re-mount the brake lines, ABS lines or any other lines mounted to the shock assembly. It is also recommended to disconnect the sway bar end link to disconnect one end of the suspension from the other to avoid any pre-load. Loosen the nuts from the top of the engine bay to loosen the shock assembly from the vehicle. Do not remove the nuts, just loosen them leaving a few threads of engagement or else the entire assembly will drop down from the vehicle.Be sure to support the suspension assembly as you remove the hardware. It would generally be a good place to start by setting the length of the coil-over assembly by approximating the desired shortened length compared to the OEM suspension components. Do not pull use too much force when doing this. Use caution and proceed carefully. Re-use the OEM hardware to do so. In some applications, the sway bar end links mount directly onto the lower bracket of the coil-over assembly. Now would be a good time to do so. BE CAREFUL, as now the rear suspension is no longer supported. Be sure to be clear of the OEM suspension or have it supported as to not let it fall and cause injury. You must now set the rear coil-over assembly length as instructed in Step (6).

This position will be your zero-preload position and it should never be adjusted any higher than this so we recommend making a mark on the threads here for reference. If the coil adjustment nut has a locking screw, it is important to tighten it down after any changes. At this point you are ready to move on to installing the coilovers on the vehicle. Zero pre-load is the point at which the springs, slider, spring plate, and coil nut adjusters are touching with no play. The amount of threads showing above the coil nut adjuster is NOT that same as pre-load. This will require lifting the vehicle high up where it will be unstable and this will also be the first time that your upper and lower coilover mounts will be tested under the full weight of the vehicle so make sure to support the vehicle with jack stands, wear eye and ear protection, go slowly, be vigilant, and use common sense. If you have any hesitations at all, have a professional help you with this process. Finally, make sure to only use grade 8 or higher bolts, lock washers, and nuts. Check for clearances around the coilovers and then, very slowly, start lowering the weight of the vehicle down onto them. Please see our Coilover Spring Re-Calculation Guide to find the proper spring rates based on calculations from your existing springs. See our Coilover Spring Re-Calculation Guide to find the proper spring rates based on calculations from your existing springs. This goes away when the shocks are warmed up so be sure to make your final changes during your first testing session. It is also normal for coilovers to require different amounts of pre-load on each corner due to different corner weights. Finally, remember that adding people, gear, and fuel will cause the coilovers to settle a bit more so take that into account during your pre-load adjustments.

For alignment recommendations on your particular vehicle and driving style, please feel free to contact our TECH department to discuss your options. It is not an absolute necessity for an average daily driven vehicle, but is necessary to extract every bit of performance from your new suspension. They will either ship charged (fully extended) or uncharged (collapsed), and with either the springs installed or included separately. The coilovers in the above photo are already charged with nitrogen and have both springs installed. King includes shock specifications on green tags attached to each shock. Check out the new comments section below ! To do this, start by fully extending the shock by pulling on the shaft by hand. Then, if the lower spring plate came installed on the lower rod end, remove it by lifting it up and sliding it out through the slot over the shaft. (Some shocks use other spring plate designs, but sliding them up will always reveal the seating mechanism.) Triple rate coilovers will have the tender spring already installed at the top as that goes on during the assembly process to put it above the stop nuts. Some coilover brands use slightly different designs but this is the most common. The lower spring plate must sit directly and securely on the lower rod end of the coilover at all times. If the spring rates are different, the lighter and often shorter spring always goes on top. For more information on spring rates see Spring Rate Calculator and Spring Re-Calculation Guide. If the lower spring plate still doesn't fit, you may need to preload the springs slightly to give yourself room. For lighter springs, this can be done with tie down straps and heavier springs will require a coil spring compressor. In most cases, you should only need to compress the springs about an inch.

To determine the maximum base height, remove the base and inspect the length of the thread inside the base. At least 20mm of the threaded section must remain in contact with the thread on the damper body. In most cases it is best to adjust the base to this maximum height and then adjust the height again after all four coilovers have been fitted. This varies depending on what vehicle you are fitting the coilovers to: Ensure both sides are set equally by measuring the distance between the top and bottom spring seat, if the point at which the seat retains the spring is slightly different don’t worry, just set both sides to the same measurement and so both springs are held securely. If the point at which the spring is held captive is slightly different from side to side don’t worry, just match them by measurements so that both sides are held securely. Set the damper to the correct length needed to hold the spring captive when adjusted to ride height. Use a jack to raise the hub into position and attach the damper. Ride height is effected ONLY by the spring adjuster. Note: Springs length will always be equal, and in round increments, any slight variance will be due to measurement technique, always set both sides equally), this will allow some droop in the suspension without excessive travel. Note that if you want to run the car very low, you will most likely need to remove the helper spring from the coilover unit and set the pre-load differently to suit. If you need any assistance, please do contact us! It may be necessary to use a floor jack to raise the hub when fitting the base. To determine the ride height, measure from the lower spring seat to the top of the base as described in the height adjustment section. (See below). Any longer will damage the suspension. A full wheel alignment will be required once the height has been set. If anything has changed then go through the height adjustment process again to make any necessary corrections.

The spring seat should only be used to hold the spring in a captive state. Once the coilovers have been fitted and pre-load adjusted, the ride height setting should be double checked to ensure both sides are equal. To adjust the height, loosen the lock nut on the coilover base and rotate the entire coilover assembly, screwing it into the base to adjust the height downwards. Note: On vehicles with separate spring and shock rear setups (350Z, E36, E46) the rear height adjustment is made with the separate inboard spring seat adjustment, please refer to step 4 above for making rear ride height adjustments. Be sure to roll the car backward and forward enough to allow the suspension to settle before measuring again. If anything has changed then adjust appropriately to correct. Both bump and rebound damping are adjusted together. The initial setting is the softest setting (full anticlockwise), which will allow the dampers to settle in and should provide a firm but comfortable ride. We recommend leaving them on full soft for around 100 miles of normal driving to allow the coilovers to settle. After around 100 miles the coilovers will have settled and will be ready for accurate adjustment. Depending on the racetrack or course, harder settings may deliver sharper handling response. Also, if harder springs are fitted, it will be necessary to increase the damping rate. For a softer ride or improved grip in wet conditions, a soft setting is recommended. Be careful not to apply too much force when adjusting the dial as it is possible to break it. Do not use any other tool than the supplied adjustment knobs, as excessive force from a spanner or allen key could break the adjustment mechanism. The primary purpose is to run more negative camber, this has a beneficial effect on front end grip and as a result a big improvement on overall handling.

Then, using a coil nut adjusting tool (we like to use a screwdriver with a nice handle that we have cut down), rotate the upper coil adjustment nut down the desired distance. Using a lubricant like WD-40 on the threads is also recommended. If the coil adjustment nut uses a locking screw, make sure to loosen it before making an adjustment and then tighten it down when you are done. With the preload adjustments made, slowly release the vehicle weight down onto the coilovers again. Hopefully, the vehicle is now settled at your desired ride height. If not, follow the above steps again as needed. While different brands of performance shocks and coilovers have recommended pressures of 100 to 250 PSI, we find that 150PSI is a great place to start across the board. While compressed air will effectively pressurize the shock, it will also introduce moisture into the shock which may cause the retaining rings to rust or seize. Nitrogen also holds constant pressure much better and is less affected by increases in shock temperature. While this guide does not cover shock valving or shock tuning, the initial test run will give you an initial feel for both. Ultimately, as far as your springs are concerned, you simply need them to be as light as possible, yet strong enough for them to support the vehicle without requiring excessive pre-load, so if you followed the above instructions, you are all set. If the vehicle has excessive body roll during testing, you will either need to add a sway bar or adjust your suspension geometry and coilover positions (or both). Please make sure to review our 4-Link Suspension Guide. The stop nuts are threaded onto the cylinder below the coil adjustment nut and are used to set the transition point between the primary rate (a combination of teh upper and locer springs) and the lower spring (secondary rate). This means that the first 1 to 3 inches of up travel will be on the softer spring rate and after that it will transition to the lower spring rate.

Spin the stop nuts to their new position and then tighten them against each other and give them each a moderate tap with the screwdriver and hammer. If you've followed the instructions above, then your spring rates are correct, and any changes moving forward should be small and incremental. The following is a quick list of adjustment you may need to make: It's easy, affordable and very effective, just contact us to get started. Install locknut and torque to 20Nm (15ft-lb). See our recommended settings below. See our recommended settings below. Loosen and retighten the upper control arm bolts. Leave the OEM bump rubber and dust boot on the OEM damper, you won’t be using them with your MPP kit. Install locknut and torque to 20Nm (15ft-lb). Make sure the spring perch does not turn! Install damper and rear spring arm outer bolt, but do not torque. You must have JavaScript enabled in your browser to utilize the functionality of this website. Corrosion may occur if threads are left unprotected, which can make it difficult to adjust at a later date (Corrosion warranty is invalid if protection is not applied). The spring seat locking collar needs only to hold the spring captive. When you are happy with your settings a suitable drift and hammer should be used to ensure all locking collars are completely tight. Write these measurements down as a reference point for height adjustment after fitting the coilovers. It is important to adjust the height evenly front and rear to maintain safe handling characteristics. Use a trolley type floor jack (not a scissor jack) and support the car with axle stands. Do not attempt to fit suspension using only a jack, as the car will not be sufficiently stable. Serious injury or death may result from improper preparation in this regard. Ensure that the jack stands are located in a suitable location as specified by the vehicle’s owner’s manual.

To set the suspension up for increased negative camber, align the top mount so the shock is leaning further in towards the centre of the car. If you’re less concerned about outright handling and more concerned with tyre wear, then you can align the top mount for reduced negative camber, on a lowered car this will help overcome increased inside tyre wear. We don’t recommend this for optimal handling, but it will increase tyre life. To set the car up for reduced negative camber, align the top mount so the shock is leaning further out away from the centre of the car. Do not dispose of in fire. Please consult a specialist recycler to dispose of the product safely. The torque settings set out in the Vehicle’s workshop manual should be adhered to in fitting the coilovers. HSD Europe will not accept responsibility for any damage or injury resulting from use of this product on public roads. Do not leave these lines unsecured as abrasion against moving parts may cause brake failure. Any contact could cause abrasion, resulting in a tyre blowout. Also check for any fluid leak from the shaft seal. A leaking damper should be repaired or replaced immediately. Wear gloves and eye protection and be careful not to let the locking wrenches slip while tightening or loosening. Driftworks Ltd are regulated by the Finance Conduct Authority. CCL No.648295.
